The Federal Government launched FreeTV on June 17, 2026. The platform promises over 100 free television channels for Nigerian households. However, football fans hoping for free Premier League or Super Eagles coverage will need to keep their DStv or GOtv subscription for now.
What Is FreeTV?
FreeTV is Nigeria’s new digital television platform. It forms part of the country’s long-running Digital Switch-Over (DSO) programme. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, launched the platform at the NIGCOMSAT headquarters in Abuja.
The goal is simple. Nigerians get access to dozens of channels without paying a monthly subscription. Viewers can watch through satellite, terrestrial broadcast, or the FreeTV mobile app. No new television set is required for most homes.
According to the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), more than 100 channels have signed up for the platform. As of launch, at least 57 channels are already live and accessible through the FreeTV app or the NigSat satellite service.
The Channel Breakdown: Where Is Football?
The NBC released an official breakdown of the 57 live channels. Here is how they split by category:
- 14 news and current affairs channels
- 15 general entertainment channels
- Six children’s channels
- Five movie channels
- Three music and entertainment channels
- Two lifestyle and talk show channels
- One business and finance channel
Notice what is missing. There is no dedicated sports or football channel in that list. This means FreeTV currently has no equivalent to SuperSport, the channel Nigerian football fans rely on for Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup coverage.
Why This Matters for Nigerian Football Fans
SuperSport remains the primary destination for live football in Nigeria. The channel holds rights to major competitions, including the Premier League and Champions League, through DStv and GOtv subscriptions. FreeTV does not currently replace this.
Fans following the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Carabao Cup, or weekend Premier League fixtures will still need a SuperSport subscription. StarTimes offers another option, through NTA Sports 24 and Sporty TV. Some recent Super Eagles friendlies have also aired on Afro Sport TV.
For now, FreeTV serves general entertainment, news, and family programming. It does not threaten SuperSport’s grip on football broadcasting in Nigeria.
Could a Sports Channel Join FreeTV Later?
The platform is still growing. NBC Director-General Charles Ebuebu confirmed that over 100 stations have signed up, even though only 57 are live so far. This leaves room for new additions, including a possible sports or football channel down the line.
Nigeria’s DSO project has a long history of delays. The programme began in 2008 following the Geneva 2006 Agreement. An official launch followed in 2016, but nationwide coverage remained incomplete for years afterward. Given this pattern, football fans should not expect free SuperSport-style coverage overnight.

Until FreeTV adds sports programming, here is where Nigerian football fans can still catch the action:
